Oakwood School Master Plan Project

On Friday, January 27, 2017, Oakwood School celebrated the much-anticipated opening of our new secondary school pedestrian bridge.

Read more about this momentous day on our school blog, Oakwood Stories.

Tuesday December 13 was a historic day for Oakwood School as the full bridge span was craned high above Magnolia Blvd. and set into place, connecting the north and south sides of our secondary school campuses.

UPDATE 11/15/16: Early this morning, the full pedestrian bridge structure arrived on campus. Over the next few weeks, it will be prepared for installation.

UPDATE 11/4/16: This photo below shows half of the support structure that will make up the new pedestrian bridge on our secondary school campus. Early next week, this structure will be delivered to our site to be painted and outfitted for installation, which is scheduled for later this month. In all, the bridge span will be 108 feet long (from column to column), 14 feet tall, and and weigh over 95,000 pounds.

UPDATE 9/26/16: Oakwood School’s pedestrian bridge project continues to be tracking on time for a target completion date of late December. Enjoy these photos with descriptions of work completed thus far.

The photos above show the erection of a steel frame structure on the south side of our campus. Together with a matching structure on the north side of Magnolia Blvd, these will serve as connection points for the pedestrian bridge. On Friday, September 16, the south campus stairs were delivered and set in place. Cement curbs were poured on Wednesday, September 21. This is where the elevator and machine room will be located on our south campus.

Looking Ahead
On Friday September 23, metal decking was delivered for the south connection structure with installation beginning the same day. This same week, metal studs will be delivered and framing of both connecting structures will begin.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Oakwood’s Master Plan has been designed to improve circulation in and around the school campus, expand onsite school parking, and provide safety for students and the surrounding community.

  • A pedestrian bridge will safely connect Oakwood students to the south and north campuses at the second level over Magnolia Boulevard. The bridge is not accessible from the street.

  • A designated pick-up and drop-off area has been designed entirely on Oakwood’s property and within the new subterranean parking garage.

  • A Traffic Management Program will be implemented to include ongoing busing programs, incentives for transit use, and carpooling for employees and Oakwood families.

  • There will be 285 additional below and at-grade parking spaces built on campus, totaling 373 parking spaces onsite.

  • There will be ongoing security provided on campus and within the neighborhood assisting our students and enhancing safety for our community.

  • Oakwood’s Master Plan build-out is only 1/3 of the allowable density. It provides 49% open space and is designed for village-style two to three story inter-connected buildings surrounded by courtyards.

  • The project is designed to complement the character and the intent of the Valley Village Specific Plan. The structures adjacent to residential are voluntarily limited to 26 feet in height.

  • The 6 Phased Master Plan has a minimum of 2 year intervals of no construction in between each phase in order to fundraise. There will NOT be 20 years of constant construction. Construction crews and vehicles will be parked onsite throughout construction, NOT on residential streets.

  • There will be no haul trucks on the residential streets during construction.

  • The new campus design provides for a lush landscape buffer between the school and its abutting neighbors, and adds street trees at the sidewalks.

  • Oakwood is committed to hosting annual meetings with the City of Los Angeles and our closest neighbors during construction.
