Community Engagement
Shaping Civic
Responsibility
Because Oakwood values civic responsibility and encourages lifelong civic engagement, community engagement and community service are a vital part of the Oakwood program at all grade levels. Community engagement is experiential learning.
By providing structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development, community engagement encourages students to do things with others rather than for them. Students also explore public policy and discuss issues of diversity and equity in their communities.
Through active involvement in various communities (local, state, national, and international), students explore the ways that socio-economic, political, and cultural factors shape community life.
High School Programs
High school students design and execute their own community engagement projects as well as volunteer with different nonprofit organizations within the community and abroad. Certain student groups present during the fall Community Engagement Fair and share their projects. All students can sign up to get involved in one of the projects presented or create their own community engagement project. Students fulfill school and community engagement activities as part of their graduation requirements.
